Shakespeare at Walden School
June 5, 2014
Under the direction of Carlyle King and Sydney Walsh, “Shakespeare at Walden” is an after-school 16-week class in which a company of students from grades two through six study the Bard with the belief that “kids can do anything!” The class culminates in a Sunday evening performance on Walden’s outdoor stage.
Walden School believes that encouraging initiative and curiosity in young learners lays a foundation for wisdom and “Shakespeare at Walden” fosters this creative quest for actors. The collaborative and cooperative process of theatre includes discussing, negotiating, rehearsing, and performing. With imagination and confidence, “Shakespeare at Walden” company players make creative choices and interpret familiar material in new ways.
Now in its ninth year, this popular course instills a love of classics while building skills through the study of theatre that students carry with them throughout their lives. Many Walden families staked their picnic blanket claim on the ground by early afternoon to get the best vantage points for the annual evening program.
